Take from Ten (part 1)
The earlier post shows the algorithm as it shows up in practice. Here I've tried to back up a little and give a (relatively) brief example of how the teaching illustrates what's happening with each step involved.

Take From Ten!!
This video should give a pretty good comparison between ways of looking at borrowing to subtract. Take From Ten helps to reduce the number of facts that a student needs to memorize and filter through to recall the desired fact, while working in the context of multi-step procedure. I hope this helps to make sense of it.

Welcome to Family Math Games Night!! Sorry I'm missing it! I'm away learning more about the impact of the latest neuroscience on best teaching for math.
I hope you all have fun and learn something.
The links at the right of the page are meant to be used by students and teachers in the classroom (for activities and helpful tools) as well as by students and parents at home (for practice and fun ways to review). Feel free to look around when you have a chance, and send me suggestions of thing we could add here.

Use the link on the right "Thinking Blocks". It will take you to a site that has a choice of what to start with.
Start with the "Watch the Video".
Then when it ends, "Begin". It will give you several problems and guide you through solving them.
You should probably have enough time to do at least 3 problems.

These are the steps that we'll use to solve word problems, but there are some questions that we can ask ourselves to help with working our way through these steps:
- What info is given?
- What do I need to work out?
- Which type of model will work best for this type of problem?
- Is there a total given?
- Are there parts given?
- Which part is larger?
- Are there 2 parts to be compared?
- Which 2 parts need to be compared?
- Which part is larger?
- How many bars should I draw?
- How should I label my model to make it match the info given?
Using the 7 Steps and these guiding questions together should help us get through most any problem they can throw our way. Let's see!
